DECISION GUIDE / Packaging studio
How do I proof small packaging type on the actual substrate?
Zooming into a PDF cannot establish that small packaging text will be readable in print. Prepare a labelled proof strip at the intended physical size, on the actual substrate and through the relevant production process. Compare the exact lettering, weight and background treatment, then obtain the responsible reviewer's decision before releasing the artwork.
Freeze the text and the production question
Fictional exercise: a carton looks readable on screen, but the team needs to choose between small type settings for a short product statement. Sample 6, 7 and 8 point rows are proposed solely as comparison candidates, not legal or manufacturing minima. No printed result exists.
Unlike calculating a raster logo's pixel budget, this decision concerns actual type forms and substrate interaction. Confirm the approved wording and applicable product requirements before choosing what to sample; readability alone does not establish compliance.
Make the proof strip comparable
Use the same approved text in clearly labelled font, weight and size combinations. Include positive and reversed versions only where they represent the proposed artwork. Record the substrate, finish and supplier's intended process.
Keep an editable text master. Converting letters to outlines changes their editability and does not automatically improve small-type output. Adobe's outline guidance is a technical reference, not a minimum-size standard.
| Candidate row | Illustrative treatment | Physical check | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 6 point, regular, positive | Inspect actual proof | Unapproved |
| B | 7 point, medium, positive | Inspect actual proof | Unapproved |
| C | 8 point, medium, reverse | Inspect actual proof | Unapproved |
Verify scale before judging the letters
Ask the printer to produce the strip using the agreed process and substrate. Confirm the resulting physical dimensions against the intended size rather than trusting a fit-to-page preview. If the output was scaled, record it and obtain a valid proof before comparing candidates.
Read the actual words, punctuation and distinguishing character details under the agreed viewing conditions. A close-up photograph can document an issue but should not replace the physical-size review. Itemlume's raster packaging concepts do not constitute this production proof.
- Freeze the approved copy and intended application.
- Label each type candidate and production condition.
- Obtain the relevant physical proof.
- Confirm that its dimensions match the intended scale.
- Record readability observations and the reviewer's decision.
Release a specific setting with its evidence
Preflight can flag issues within a configured profile, but a clean report does not prove physical readability or complete wording. Compare the final artwork with the approved text as well as the accepted strip.
Save the font and artwork revision, proof identity, observation conditions and accepted treatment. If the substrate, ink treatment or final size changes, ask whether another proof is required. Do not turn this fictional comparison into a universal claim that one point size always prints safely.
Record the decision in a manual worksheet
Manual Actual-Size Packaging Type Proof Record
The download contains fictional practice rows. Actual evidence and release decisions are blank for you to fill in. This manual record does not inspect products, update a store or certify compliance. Keep private material out of public copies.

Frequently asked questions
Is 8 point always safe for packaging?
No universal threshold is supplied here. Applicable requirements, type design, material and production evidence need their own review.
Will converting small text to outlines guarantee sharp printing?
No. Preserve the editable source and inspect the actual-size production proof; outlining alone does not establish readability.
