How do I keep test conditions attached to an AI-written performance claim?

An AI-written performance claim must not become broader than its supporting test. Match every proposed statement to the tested product configuration, environment, procedure, and recorded result before designing the advertisement. If the wording removes a material condition, restore it, narrow the claim, or withdraw it. A convincing visual cannot replace missing performance evidence.

01 / DECISION GUIDE

Identify what the report actually supports

A test report does not automatically support every statement about a product's performance. Its conclusion belongs to a particular product configuration, environment, procedure, and measured outcome. When AI summarizes the report, these boundaries can disappear while the numerical result remains.

Consider a fictional fan report describing a measurement taken at setting 2 in a specified room. The exercise provides no numerical result, room dimensions, or measurement procedure. Those details must come from the actual report before any performance statement is approved.

Suppose an AI draft says, 'Powerful performance in any room at every setting.' That promise extends beyond the fictional evidence. The editorial task is not to make the sentence more persuasive, but to determine what the report can genuinely support.

Build a report-to-claim coverage card

Create one coverage card per proposed claim. Record the exact product version, operating setting, environment, test procedure, measured result, and source reference. Compare each field with the proposed wording. An omitted condition deserves review even when the remaining words are technically accurate.

Use 'unknown' for missing information rather than completing the report from assumptions. A reviewer must also check whether the advertised audience could reasonably interpret the statement as applying beyond the documented test.

Choose between retaining, narrowing, and withdrawing

Retain a claim only when its complete meaning is supported. Narrow it when the report supports a more limited statement. Withdraw it when the result, tested configuration, or essential conditions cannot be established. Narrowing is not permission to invent a missing measurement.

For the fictional fan, a possible internal placeholder is 'Performance measured at setting 2 under documented room conditions.' This describes the scope of a hypothetical test, not an approved customer-facing performance benefit. The actual result and report must be reviewed before drafting that benefit.

  1. Copy the proposed claim without rewriting its meaning.
  2. Match every implied condition against the source report.
  3. Mark unsupported extensions and missing results.
  4. Choose retain, narrow, or withdraw.
  5. Send the revised wording and evidence card to the responsible reviewer before design.

Prevent condition loss during creative production

Conditions can disappear again when a long description becomes a headline, comparison graphic, video title, or short caption. Review the final customer-facing message, not merely the approved draft. A small footnote should not be assumed to repair an otherwise unconditional promise.

Maintain a manual claim register containing the approved wording, required conditions, report identifier, product revision, reviewer, and creative versions. If the report or product changes, reopen the affected claims before reusing them.

US FTC guidance establishes the principle that advertising claims need supporting evidence before publication. This editorial workflow is not a legally certified compliance method; the responsible team must assess applicable requirements.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep the test result but remove the room conditions?

Not automatically. Determine whether removing those conditions broadens the promise beyond the evidence. If so, restore the limitations or withdraw the claim.

What if the report confirms a test but does not provide the measured result?

Do not invent a number or performance benefit. Request the complete record and hold the claim until its support can be assessed.
