I edited the product inside a Smart Object. Why did the main banner not update?

Check whether you saved the actual Smart Object contents and returned to the document that references them. Editing an exported copy or leaving the contents unsaved can leave the parent banner unchanged.

01 / I EDITED THE PRODUCT INSIDE A SMART OBJECT. WHY DID THE MAIN BANNER NOT UPDATE?

Work through the cause

  1. Open the product contents from the intended layer in the parent PSD. Note the opened document name and whether the object is embedded or linked.
  2. Make a small reversible change, save that contents document and return to the parent. Confirm that the expected placement updates.
  3. Restore the approved product and save the parent PSD. If a linked source changed elsewhere, inspect the link status and update deliberately.

A concrete case (illustrative)

Illustrative case: a designer edits a separately exported bottle PNG while the banner contains an embedded copy. The standalone PNG and the embedded contents are different documents. Replacing or editing the actual embedded contents fixes the dependency.

Acceptance and next action

Pass when a controlled source change reaches the expected banner and no unrelated placements change. Do not flatten the entire banner merely to hide an unresolved dependency; the next teammate will face the same ambiguity.
