DECISION GUIDE / Virtual try-on

Should POD artwork keep a fixed physical size across garment sizes?

POD artwork does not necessarily keep the same physical dimensions across every garment size, nor does it always scale proportionally. Use the fulfillment provider's current product-specific file guidelines to determine what happens to the print. Record when a separate artwork file is required, then compare mockups and physical samples for selected sizes before approving the range.

01 / DECISION GUIDE

Distinguish garment grading from print-artwork scaling

Clothing sizes change garment dimensions, but that does not establish how the printed design changes. Artwork may retain a physical dimension, scale according to a provider rule, or require separate files for particular products.

Fictional exercise: a seller offers small and large versions of a printed shirt. The provider's available print regions differ by size. The seller has not yet obtained the exact scaling rule or produced physical samples.

Unlike evaluating whether a garment photograph represents every size, this decision concerns the fulfillment provider's treatment of the artwork itself.

02 / DECISION GUIDE

Record the provider's actual artwork rule

Obtain the specific garment's current printing guidelines. Record the available print area, artwork handling across sizes, applicable placement reference, and whether multiple print files can or must be supplied.

Printful describes size-dependent design scaling for its products. That information must not become a universal rule for other suppliers or all garment styles.

Compare the size-specific production previews

For the fictional shirts, first establish the provider's rule. Then prepare the correct artwork files and inspect the small and large mockups for placement, design completeness, and proximity to the available print boundaries.

A mockup can help identify a possible issue but does not establish the physical print size. Obtain production samples when the decision requires confirmation of actual results.

  1. Identify the exact POD garment, size range, and printing method.
  2. Obtain the provider's current product-specific file guidelines.
  3. Record the scaling rule and permitted print areas for each size.
  4. Prepare separate artwork revisions wherever required.
  5. Inspect size-specific mockups against the documented rule.
  6. Request physical samples for the selected sizes and review them before release.
04 / DECISION GUIDE

Approve the size range without inventing a universal rule

The fictional small and large shirts remain unapproved because their provider-specific artwork behavior is unknown. Neither 'always keep the same centimeters' nor 'always enlarge proportionally' is justified.

Keep the provider specification, approved artwork file, garment size, preview, sample observation, and reviewer decision together. If only one size has been sampled, do not describe the entire range as physically checked.

When the fulfillment provider updates its template or changes the available print area, reopen the affected size records. A convincing generated model image cannot establish the dimensions of the printed production result.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Should the same chest graphic always measure the same number of centimeters?

Not necessarily. Follow the actual product-specific scaling and file requirements of the fulfillment provider.

Does approving a medium-size sample approve every garment size?

No. Check the provider's size-dependent rules and obtain additional production evidence where needed.
