DECISION GUIDE / Virtual try-on
How do I check pockets and seams inside an otherwise valid print area?
Being inside a template's safe area does not establish that every point on the real garment prints equally. Map pockets, seams and raised construction against the exact artwork placement, then ask the fulfillment provider whether that configuration is supported. Keep any unresolved obstruction out of the approved production mockup.
Separate the safe boundary from physical construction
Fictional exercise: small lettering crosses the upper edge of a hoodie's kangaroo pocket. The artwork lies inside the displayed safe rectangle, but the seller has not checked whether the intended printing process supports that crossing. No print failure has been measured.
This differs from preserving a zipper or button in an AI photograph. The decision is whether the real printing surface and proposed artwork can work together. An accurately drawn pocket can still interrupt an unsuitable production placement.
Overlay the actual garment landmarks
Obtain the exact garment, size, printing method and current provider template. Identify the pocket edge, seams and other relevant construction within the proposed artwork. Keep the critical words separate from decorative regions.
Printful describes its safe zone as protection for essential design elements. That boundary does not independently approve a particular pocket crossing. Request the provider's product-specific placement decision instead of inventing a universal seam clearance.
| Artwork region | Fictional obstruction | Next evidence | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small lettering | Pocket edge | Provider placement confirmation | Hold |
| Decorative background | Nearby seam | Process-specific sample | Review |
| Unobstructed alternative | No known crossing | Exact template and sample | Candidate only |
Compare a permitted alternative
If the crossing is unsupported or unresolved, prepare a separately identified alternative that moves the critical wording to a provider-approved region. Preserve the original design privately so the change remains inspectable. Do not simply erase the pocket from the mockup.
Follow the provider's accepted file preparation and physical-sample process. Itemlume can illustrate apparel concepts, but it does not configure a fulfillment printer, approve a seam crossing or create a supplier-certified production file.
- Freeze the garment and artwork revisions.
- Mark each physical feature intersecting critical artwork.
- Obtain the provider's placement response.
- Prepare an approved alternative where needed.
- Compare the physical sample with both the file and the mockup.
Release the sampled placement, not the rectangle
Inspect word continuity, edge definition and placement on the actual sample. Record any obstruction without assigning its cause from a photograph alone. A successful sample for one product and size is not evidence for every hoodie variant.
Keep the template version, provider response, artwork file and sample decision together. Reopen the check when the garment construction or print process changes. A polished sales preview must describe the accepted placement rather than promising an unverified result.
Record the decision in a manual worksheet

The download contains fictional practice rows. Actual evidence and release decisions are blank for you to fill in. This manual record does not inspect products, update a store or certify compliance. Keep private material out of public copies.

Frequently asked questions
Can a safe-area warning detect every seam or pocket problem?
Do not assume so. Check the actual garment construction and obtain the provider's process-specific placement decision.
Can I remove the pocket in the generated preview?
That would misrepresent the garment. Revise the artwork placement or choose a supported garment instead.
