PRODUCT CREATIVE / PRODUCTION AND HANDOFF
Why Did a Printify Mockup Change Not Change the Printed Logo?
Changing a product mockup does not assign different production artwork to a Printify variant. By default, a design applies to all color variants. Eligible products can use a color-specific design assignment, while products without color options require a different arrangement when shoppers must choose between designs. Decide which artwork will actually be printed before treating the listing images as evidence of correct fulfillment.
Separate the displayed mockup from the printed design
A merchant sells the same T-shirt in black and white. The black shirt should carry a white logo, while the white shirt should carry a black logo.
The merchant prepares attractive mockups showing both combinations, then assumes the production artwork automatically follows the image shown to each shopper.
That assumption confuses presentation with manufacturing instructions. A mockup communicates the expected appearance, but changing the displayed image does not itself establish a different print design for a variant.
Printify's default design applies across the product's color options unless the merchant uses the applicable color-specific design workflow.
The key decision is which artwork belongs to each production variant, not which photograph appears first in the listing gallery.
Treat the mockup as a representation to compare against the production assignment, rather than as the assignment itself.
Use color-specific artwork when the product supports it
For an eligible non-embroidery product with multiple color variants, create the product in Product Creator or open Edit design for an existing product. Select the intended color, choose Make a specific design for that color, and remove its previous design.
Upload the intended artwork from the computer or library for that selected color. The blue dot identifies a color-specific assignment; it does not prove the correct logo file was chosen. Inspect the actual artwork, size and position against the approved design.
When the design is ready, use Save product, then publish or republish to the store. Afterward compare the actual store option, production artwork and displayed mockup; a storefront image alone cannot establish the fulfillment mapping.
The documented color-specific control is unavailable for embroidery and for products without color options. Check the actual product eligibility rather than treating every Printify listing as the same workflow.
Follow Printify’s specific-design and migration instructions for the applicable product branch.
Use a Different Branch for Designs Without Color Options
For a product without color options, such as a mug with selectable flower and leaf designs, the cited alternative begins with the design variants in a connected Shopify, Etsy or TikTok store. Create a separate Printify product for each design, then use the Migration Tool to match each existing store variant to its corresponding Printify product. They are not combined automatically.
This is a documented workflow explanation, not an executed account change, migration, order or print test. Do not invent a color option or assume that matching SKU text establishes fulfillment. Record the actual linked product and design for each store option.
Keep an Actual Store-to-Artwork Mapping
Use one record per actual store option. Keep the connected store listing and variant, Printify product, color where applicable, approved artwork file and observed assignment together. Record the displayed mockup separately so the two can be compared.
If the selected flower option points to a leaf design, resolve the production assignment before approving the listing. Save the actual observation and outstanding decision rather than pre-filling successful publishing, matching or physical printing.
Store option to production-artwork record — actual observations
Save a copy of this record and enter actual inputs, actions and observations. Keep incomplete checks pending; do not prefill success.
| Record | Actual value to complete |
|---|---|
| Store listing and actual option or variant identifier | |
| Linked Printify product and applicable color | |
| Approved production artwork file identity | |
| Observed default or specific production assignment | |
| Blue-dot state, size and placement observations where applicable | |
| Displayed mockup identity and comparison with artwork | |
| Actual save/publish or migration state, if performed | |

Frequently asked questions
Will uploading a different mockup change the logo printed on a specific shirt color?
No. Mockup presentation and production artwork assignment are different responsibilities. Use the documented color-specific design workflow where supported.
How can shoppers choose between two mug designs if the mug has no color variants?
The documented alternative uses store-side design variants, separate Printify products for each design, and the Migration Tool to associate store variants with the corresponding products, where supported.
