PRODUCT CREATIVE / PRODUCTION AND HANDOFF
Why does a black Placeit preview import into Printify as Unlinked instead of linking to Black?
The preview color does not create a variant link. Printify documents Placeit integration imports as Unlinked mockups. Decide whether you need a general title image or a specific variant assignment before repeating the import or changing your production artwork.
A black preview still needs a product identity check
The integration currently supports apparel front-print mockups. Its selected imports enter Unlinked mockups, which can serve as the title mockup but cannot link to a specific color variant. A Black preview therefore does not establish Black assignment.
Compare the depicted garment with the actual SKU: neckline, sleeve shape and visible construction should fit the offered item. A black shirt can still be the wrong style. Record which artwork and print area the image represents so a campaign photograph does not accidentally stand for a different product.
The documented saving route requires Placeit sign-in and subscription access. Confirm account eligibility separately; an unavailable download does not justify changing the approved print design.
Choose a general title image or a variant-specific view
Illustrative exercise: these two fictional briefs are not executed imports. Project A needs one general front-view campaign title image. An unlinked image can suit that role if the merchant accepts it as the title and verifies the garment, artwork and offered SKU. The preview color alone provides none of those approvals.
Project B needs a back-view image assigned to the Black variant. That requirement exceeds the front-only integration. First find a template that actually supports the needed back view and matches the garment. Then evaluate the downloaded image through Printify's custom-upload route, where a variant can be selected.
Use the manual route for an explicit variant assignment
Printify currently says direct Placeit Send to Printify is not working as expected and recommends downloading the mockup and uploading it manually. This describes that transfer feature; it does not diagnose every placeholder, failed upload or Unlinked result.
For custom uploads, the documented path is My products, the product details, View all mockups, then Upload. Choose the file and its variant, adjust image order, and Save selection. Publish with Mockups checked. Before proceeding, confirm that the chosen file shows the intended back print rather than a front template renamed as a back view.
Verify the result at the point where shoppers choose
Keep a short mapping between the file, SKU, print area and intended role. For A, inspect the actual title image and ensure it represents the offer. For B, select Black in the store and inspect the assigned image and gallery. Assignment alone does not establish how every storefront filters additional views.
One r/Printify post reports placeholder artwork in the integration and buffering during a manual upload. It establishes a reported symptom, not its cause or prevalence. If your upload also fails, record that actual state; do not treat the documented workaround as a guaranteed successful transfer.
No Placeit or Printify operation, upload, download, generation, subscription purchase or publication was performed for these exercises. The handoff remains a proposed workflow until the chosen file and actual store behavior have been checked. It does not describe an Itemlume integration.
Fictional exercise: unlinked campaign title versus a Black back-view assignment
These are illustrative exercise rows. Save a copy and record your own observations; the example is not an executed acceptance test.
| Fictional brief | Required view and role | Product evidence | Route decision | Listing check | Storefront check |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A: General campaign title | Front view, general title image | Actual SKU, garment construction and approved artwork | Accept an integrated Unlinked image only if the title role meets the brief | Choose the intended title; do not claim Black binding | Title represents the real offer and selected product |
| B: Black back-print view | Back view assigned to Black | Suitable back-view template and actual garment reference | Download an appropriate mockup and evaluate custom upload with variant selection | Assign Black, check order, save and publish with Mockups | Select Black and inspect the assigned view and actual gallery behavior |

Frequently asked questions
Can an integrated Placeit image become the title without being linked to Black?
Yes. Printify documents a title role for Unlinked mockups. Verify the actual garment and offer, and distinguish that role from a color-specific assignment.
Does manual upload make a front-only template suitable for a back-print listing?
No. Select a template that actually shows the required view, check the resulting image, and then assign the appropriate variant through the custom-upload path.
