Assets & tasks / FIELD GUIDE
How do you write distinct descriptions for nearly identical products?
Write the shared facts once, then identify what genuinely changes the purchase decision for each SKU. Distinct descriptions should explain different products, not disguise duplicate text with synonyms. Keep a common approved section when the facts truly are common.
Build a difference inventory
For a fictional organizer range, two versions may share material and construction but differ in compartments and intended desk layout. Record those differences from actual evidence. If the only difference is color, do not invent a separate personality or performance story for each shade just to make the copy unique.
A public Shopify question describes product descriptions changing together across products. That can be a template-data issue rather than a writing problem. Confirm that each product page receives the correct product-specific content before rewriting every description.
Divide common and unique text
| Field | Treatment | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Shared construction | Approved common paragraph | Same fact |
| Distinct compartment layout | SKU-specific explanation | Different choice |
| Color only | Accurate variant label | No invented benefit |
| Template placement | Product-specific data source | Prevent cross-product overwrite |
The goal is useful differentiation. A page can honestly share some text with related products when it still identifies its specific offer clearly.
Draft around the choice
For each version, answer who should choose it and which verified attribute supports that choice. Remove unsupported comparisons such as “more professional” when the only difference is appearance. Pair the description with the correct image and option name.
Verify two pages independently
Edit one draft product and check that the neighboring product has not changed unintentionally. Then read both pages side by side. Itemlume does not repair storefront templates or automatically synchronize SKU descriptions. Use family comparisons for shared decisions and batch release records for mapping.
A shared-block diagnostic
Two fictional organizers share construction but differ in compartment count. A reviewer changes one description and finds the other page changed too. Pause the writing exercise and ask the storefront owner to inspect the shared template block. Once each page receives its intended data, retain a common construction paragraph and add a specific compartment explanation. Test another draft edit to confirm that it remains local to the product. The resulting distinction comes from real attributes and correct data placement, rather than a model generating dozens of unrelated adjectives.
