DECISION GUIDE / A+ product pages
How do I show installation and service clearance separately from product dimensions?
A product can fit inside an installation space yet lack room to open, operate, or service. Show its fixed footprint separately from the additional space required by moving parts and maintenance access. Measure each operating state against the actual product documentation, then label the relevant boundaries. Never infer clearance from a convincing AI room scene.
Separate physical fit from operational access
External dimensions answer whether a product occupies a particular space. Installation and service clearance answer different questions: can the product operate in that location, and can someone reach the parts requiring maintenance? A cabinet that fits between two walls may still have a door that cannot open fully.
Consider a fictional cabinet that fits within a 400 mm opening. Its door swings outward, and a filter must be accessed during servicing. The 400 mm opening is an illustrative installation constraint, not a verified product specification. Neither the door clearance nor the filter access space has been measured in this exercise.
Do not convert the cabinet width into an assumed operating allowance. Obtain the actual manual, approved product drawings, and physical measurements before publishing any clearance value.
Map fixed and changing clearance envelopes
Use a separate boundary for each relevant product state. The fixed envelope describes the installed body and its permanent protrusions. A swept envelope describes the space occupied as a door or other component moves. A service envelope identifies the access space needed for an approved maintenance operation.
These envelopes may overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A door may require free space in front of the cabinet, while filter replacement may require access from a different direction. Check each requirement independently.
| Envelope | Product state | Evidence needed | Diagram treatment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed footprint | Installed, door closed | Measured body and protrusions | Solid boundary |
| Door sweep | Door moving to required position | Approved opening path | Distinct swept region |
| Filter service | Approved filter-access operation | Manual and physical access check | Separate service region |
| Combined clearance | Relevant operations considered together | Reviewed envelope overlay | Label applicable states |
Construct the diagram without inventing space
Begin with a documented plan or elevation view. Mark the fixed cabinet outline first, then add the verified door movement and service-access boundaries. Use different line treatments and direct labels so buyers can distinguish permanent dimensions from state-dependent space.
A sales illustration is not a measurement instrument. Drawing applications may distinguish model-space, paper-space, and projected dimensions; therefore, verify displayed measurements against the authoritative product record rather than reading values from a scaled illustration.

- Identify the exact product revision and installation orientation.
- Collect the approved manual and physical measurement records.
- Draw the fixed footprint with documented endpoints.
- Overlay the verified opening path and service-access envelope.
- Label each state, measurement source, and unresolved requirement.
- Have the responsible product reviewer check the completed diagram.
Decide whether the location is actually suitable
For the fictional cabinet, fitting within the 400 mm opening establishes only the proposed body fit. It does not establish sufficient room for door movement or filter servicing. Mark both additional requirements as unverified until suitable records are available.
Before publication, compare the final diagram with the approved measurements and manual. Check whether nearby walls, handles, adjacent furniture, or access restrictions interfere with the illustrated operations. Do not publish an unconditional installation promise when a required envelope remains unknown.
Keep a manual handoff record containing the product revision, installation orientation, clearance definitions, supporting records, reviewer, and diagram version. If the hinge, door, or filter-access design changes, reopen the affected clearance review rather than reusing the old diagram.

Frequently asked questions
If the cabinet fits the available width, can I say it fits the installation space?
Only as a narrowly defined body-fit statement if supported by measurements. Full installation suitability also depends on the required opening, operating, and service clearances.
Can I estimate door clearance from an AI-generated image?
No. Obtain the actual opening geometry and relevant measurements. Use generated imagery only as a reviewed illustration, not as clearance evidence.
