Which Squarespace Product Image Controls Each Preview?
Check the site version and display location first. In Squarespace 7.1, the first product-editor image is featured by default, and featured imagery represents the product in store and product-detail contexts; use Set as thumbnail or the image menu to choose it. In 7.0, the first editor image remains the first detail-page image even when featured selection differs. Shared product URLs use the alternate social-sharing image, or the featured image when no alternate is assigned.
Identify the three image responsibilities
A merchant may prepare several photographs of the same fragrance: a clean front view, a back-label view, and a seasonal composition. Each can serve a different presentation purpose without representing a different product.
The featured image is associated with store-level product presentation, including thumbnail contexts. Additional images contribute to the product-detail gallery. The alternate social-sharing image serves the preview when the product-detail URL is shared through supported social or messaging contexts.
These are separate responsibilities. Changing the featured image does not automatically mean the first detail-page image or a specifically assigned social-sharing image will change.
Before editing, identify the exact location showing the unwanted picture. Is the problem in the store listing, the product page, or the shared-link preview?
That location determines which image role should be investigated first.
Check the Squarespace version before changing gallery order
The official product-image page checked here is marked October 1, 2026. Its separate version 7.1 and 7.0 sections must not be treated as one universal gallery rule.
For version 7.1, the first image in the product editor becomes featured by default. To choose a different featured image, hover over it and use Set as thumbnail, or the image’s ••• menu. The documentation lists featured imagery for store pages, product blocks, summary blocks and product-details pages. Verify the actual product-detail presentation after selecting it.
For version 7.0, a separately selected featured image can represent the store thumbnail while the first image in the product editor still opens the product-detail page. If that opening view is wrong, inspect image order separately from featured selection.
For either version, inspect an explicit alternate social-sharing image before diagnosing a product-URL preview. If none is set, featured imagery is the documented fallback. Changing gallery order alone does not establish a new explicit social image.
| Presentation location | Image responsibility | Merchant check |
|---|---|---|
| Store listing thumbnail | Featured-image behavior for the applicable version | Inspect the featured image and version-specific rules |
| Version 7.1 featured presentation | First editor image by default; selectable with Set as thumbnail or image menu | Verify selected featured image and actual store/detail contexts |
| First product-detail image in version 7.0 | First image in the product editor | Inspect gallery order independently of featured selection |
| Shared product-detail URL preview | Alternate Social Sharing image, otherwise featured fallback | Inspect the explicit social-sharing selection |
Compare both version sections in Squarespace’s version-specific product-image instructions before applying a gallery rule.
Illustrative exercise: one fragrance, three photographs
Illustrative exercise — fictional product assets, not executed Squarespace edits, uploads, or external preview tests.
Input A is a Squarespace 7.0 fragrance product with three photographs. The merchant selects a clean front view as featured, but the back-label photograph remains first in the product editor.
The store thumbnail may use the featured presentation while the detail page still begins with the back-label image. The merchant should inspect gallery order rather than repeatedly replacing the featured selection.
Input B uses the same fragrance SKU. The merchant wants a seasonal composition in shared-link previews while keeping the clean front photograph as the store thumbnail.
The team should evaluate the alternate social-sharing image rather than changing the product's primary store presentation.
The seasonal photograph must still depict the actual product being sold. It should not introduce an unoffered gift set or imply additional contents.
Verify each presentation independently
Maintain a small image map containing the product SKU, featured image, first detail-gallery image, and alternate social-sharing image.
Review each location separately after a change. A correct store thumbnail does not establish that the detail gallery opens correctly, and a correct product page does not establish that external link previews show the intended composition.
If no alternate social-sharing image is assigned, Squarespace uses the featured image as the documented fallback.
External social and messaging platforms may retain previously fetched link previews. Do not promise immediate refresh merely because the Squarespace image assignment has changed.
Stop when the intended image responsibilities are correctly assigned for the site's actual version and the relevant display locations have been checked. Avoid treating all three as one interchangeable image slot.

Frequently asked questions
Why didn't changing my featured image change the first product-detail image?
In Squarespace 7.0, the first image in the product editor controls the first detail-page image even if the featured image is different. Check your actual site version before applying this rule.
Which image appears when someone shares my product-detail URL?
The alternate social-sharing image is intended for that preview. If none is assigned, Squarespace uses the featured image by default, although external preview refresh timing is not guaranteed.
How do I choose a different featured image in Squarespace 7.1?
The first product-editor image is featured by default. Hover over the desired image and use Set as thumbnail, or use its image menu. Check the resulting store and product-detail presentation; do not substitute the separate 7.0 first-image rule.
