Can I remove a WooCommerce gallery photo without deleting the shared source file?

Yes. Remove the photo from that product’s Product gallery assignment rather than deleting the attachment from the Media Library. Because the same source file may be used by other products, first record where it is referenced and verify the product’s gallery after saving.

Separate assignment from source

WooCommerce treats a product’s displayed media assignment separately from the underlying Media Library attachment. Removing an image from Product gallery changes what this product displays; deleting the attachment removes the shared source from the Media Library and may affect every product, page, or other location that references it.

The featured Product Image is already the first gallery item in the product display. Therefore, a photo that appears first may be assigned as the featured image rather than being only a gallery entry. Removing it from Product gallery alone may not remove it from the displayed product if it remains selected as Product Image.

  1. Open a non-destructive test copy of the product, or record the current Product Image and Product gallery values before editing.
  2. Identify the target attachment by its thumbnail, filename, or attachment details. Record whether it appears in Product Image, Product gallery, or both.
  3. Inspect the attachment’s known references in your site’s product and content records. If you cannot establish whether another product uses it, treat the source as shared and do not delete it.

Safe removal sequence

In the product editor, remove only the target thumbnail from the Product gallery field. If the target is also selected in Product Image, decide whether the product should have a different featured image; select an approved replacement for Product Image before saving, or leave the featured-image change for a separate edit.

Save or update the test copy, then inspect the resulting product page. Check both the main displayed image and the thumbnail gallery. The exact appearance can differ between a classic gallery and a block gallery, and zoom or lightbox behavior depends on the implementation and theme.

  1. 1. Open the product copy and note the current Product Image and Product gallery.
  2. 2. Remove the target from Product gallery only.
  3. 3. If it is also Product Image, choose the intended replacement or confirm that the featured image should change.
  4. 4. Save the copy and inspect the product page in the same gallery style used by the live product.
  5. 5. Only after the result passes should you repeat the assignment change on the live product.

Branch on the evidence

If the target disappears from the gallery but remains as the main image, it is still assigned as Product Image. Replace or remove that assignment according to the intended product presentation, then retest.

If the target remains visible after removing the Product gallery assignment, determine whether it is the Product Image, a block-gallery item, or content embedded elsewhere. Edit that specific assignment or content reference. Do not delete the Media Library attachment merely because the thumbnail still appears.

If another product or page references the attachment, keep the source file and remove only the unwanted product-level assignment. If no references are found and permanent deletion is genuinely intended, confirm the result in a test copy first; deletion is a separate cleanup decision.

Illustrative exercise

Illustrative exercise: define Asset A as “Blue Mug Front,” an attachment currently selected as Product Image and also listed in Product gallery. Define Asset B as “Blue Mug Side,” a different attachment used only as a gallery item. The goal is to remove Asset B from this product while preserving its Media Library file.

For the A/B comparison, remove Asset B from Product gallery and save the test copy. Pass means Asset B is absent from this product’s thumbnails and displayed image, while its attachment still exists and any separately checked product using it remains unchanged. Fail means Asset B still appears on this product, or the source attachment was deleted. Asset A should remain the featured image, demonstrating that gallery unassignment did not alter the Product Image.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

What if I remove the thumbnail but the image still appears first?

Check Product Image. The featured Product Image is already the first gallery item, so the image may still be assigned as the featured image even after its gallery assignment changes.

Does this procedure work identically for classic and block galleries?

The reference distinction still applies, but the visible gallery and its controls can differ. Confirm which gallery implementation the product uses and validate the saved product page before applying the change live.
