DECISION GUIDE / A+ product pages
How do I explain accessory dependencies and mutually exclusive product options?
Optional accessories are not always interchangeable or freely combinable. Before illustrating a product setup, identify which options require other components, which cannot coexist, and which complete configurations customers can actually order. Build a dependency tree from verified product records, then compare every illustrated arrangement with the store's real purchasing options. Do not present all accessories installed simultaneously.
Identify dependencies before designing the setup
An included-accessories list answers what arrives in the package. A configuration tree answers a different question: which choices can coexist, and what must be selected before another option becomes available? A product may have several optional accessories without supporting every possible combination.
Consider a fictional desk lamp offered with either a clamp or a freestanding base. The two mounting options are mutually exclusive in this exercise. A large shade also requires a specified arm. An image showing the clamp, base, and large shade together without the required arm would describe no supported configuration.
These relationships are fictional planning assumptions, not tested compatibility findings. Before publishing a real configuration, obtain the manufacturer's option records and confirmation from the responsible product owner.
Build a dependency tree with explicit rules
Start with the main product, then branch into mounting choices and dependent accessories. Record three different relationships: requires, excludes, and independently selectable. Do not infer that accessories work together simply because each is individually described as compatible with the main product.
For the fictional lamp, choose exactly one mounting option. If the large shade is selected, the specified arm must also be selected. The tree should lead to complete configurations rather than a decorative collection of every available component.
| Option | Dependency rule | Fictional example | Review decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clamp | Excludes base | Clamp-mounted lamp | Valid in scenario |
| Base | Excludes clamp | Freestanding lamp | Valid in scenario |
| Large shade | Requires specified arm | Large shade with matching arm | Conditional |
| Clamp + base | Mutually exclusive | Both mounted together | Reject |
Test complete configurations against ordering
A logically valid configuration is not necessarily purchasable. The store might offer the required components separately, omit a particular combination, or lack a way to select the complete arrangement. Verify the actual buying path rather than assuming the illustration defines an available bundle.
Shopify provides bundle-management capabilities, but the store's implemented options must be checked separately. Itemlume does not configure Shopify bundles, synchronize inventory, or validate checkout combinations.
For the fictional lamp, a large shade with its required arm may satisfy the dependency rule. It should still be held from purchase-oriented advertising until the seller confirms that customers can order the complete arrangement.
- List the exact main-product and accessory identifiers.
- Record every required, excluded, and independent option relationship.
- Generate candidate configurations manually from those rules.
- Check each candidate against actual store selections and purchase records.
- Mark each configuration as orderable, unavailable, or unresolved.
- Approve illustrations only for supported configurations with accurate purchasing descriptions.
Turn the tree into an understandable buying guide
Present the customer's decisions in sequence: choose a mounting method, select the desired shade, and add the required arm where applicable. Separate a configuration illustration from a list of available accessories. Labels should explain dependencies at the point where buyers make the choice.
Itemlume can assist with free text planning after sign-in and raster image concepts at current quoted prices. Its visuals cannot establish physical compatibility or store availability. Add exact option labels and dependency arrows through a manually reviewed layout when needed.
Before release, inspect the final image and destination page together. Reject any setup that combines excluded options, omits required components, or appears directly purchasable when the actual ordering path does not support it. Retain the approved dependency-tree version with the creative.

Frequently asked questions
If two accessories each work with the main product, can I show them installed together?
Not automatically. Verify whether they can coexist and whether one changes the requirements of the other. Individual compatibility does not prove combined compatibility.
Can I advertise a valid configuration when the store sells its parts separately?
Only after confirming that customers can obtain the complete required arrangement and that the buying instructions accurately explain how. Do not imply a one-click bundle exists unless it does.
