REFERENCE TROUBLESHOOTING / Virtual try-on
Why do pleats reverse direction when AI changes a skirt’s pose?
Supply a view that shows how the pleats open, overlap and attach at the waistband. A skirt silhouette cannot establish fold direction. When reviewing a new pose, follow several adjacent folds from waist to hem and distinguish natural opening from an invented arrangement.
Identify what the reference actually proves
Pleats combine front-facing surfaces, tucked surfaces and shadows. When the pose changes, a generator may reinterpret those dark areas as printed stripes or switch the overlap direction. A fan-shaped pose can also make each pleat appear equally wide when the real garment does not behave that way. The relevant question is not whether the skirt has enough folds; it is whether the photographed fold structure can produce the new arrangement.
Prepare the evidence before generating
- Photograph the skirt hanging or worn in a relaxed pose with the waistband and hem visible. Avoid flattening the folds for convenience.
- Capture a close view across neighboring pleats, including one partially opened fold that explains the overlap. Keep the garment orientation clear.
- Record whether the style uses repeated knife pleats, a box arrangement or another verified construction. Do not infer the back from the front.
- Generate a modest pose change first. Trace the same landmark folds and look for reversals or discontinuities at the waistband.
Example creative request and a review matrix
Illustrative request: Create a restrained standing fashion image of the referenced pleated skirt. Preserve the actual fold overlap direction, waistband attachment, pleat grouping and hem. Allow natural opening caused by the pose without changing the construction into printed stripes or evenly radiating artificial panels. Keep any unseen back construction outside the frame.
| Observed symptom | Evidence to inspect | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Dark folds become colored stripes | Compare whether shading follows the fold surfaces | Reject replacement of relief with print |
| Overlap direction switches halfway down | Trace a continuous fold from waist to hem | Reject the discontinuity |
| The pose reveals an unsupported reverse side | Check whether an actual reference exists | Capture that view or choose a supported pose |
Make the release decision
A real detail photograph should remain available if pleat construction matters to the sale. This guide concerns depicting folds, not prescribing ironing or care. A generated flowing pose cannot demonstrate recovery, durability or wrinkle resistance. When a result fails, describe the specific fold and overlap that changed; repeated requests for more movement usually make structural review harder rather than resolving the source ambiguity.

Frequently asked questions
Is counting the pleats enough?
No. Two images can have the same apparent count while differing in overlap direction, grouping or waistband construction. Review the fold path and its landmarks.
